THE HISTORY OF GHANA'S ELMINA CASTLE INCLUDES ITS DARKER SIDE.
Touring most castles conjures up visions of a luxurious past, but at Elmina Castle in Ghana, you'll meet a more sordid tale: it was the site of the first European slave-trading base in Sub-Saharan Africa, dating back to the 16th century. In commemoration of those who have walked through its walls, as well as as a warning against future crimes, a visit to the castle is highly recommended.
The coast of Ghana is one of the country's most intimidating, but equally beautiful, features.. Between Accra and the border with Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana's southernmost point hits the ocean on its southernmost point. While Ghanaian beaches are attractive, they are not suitable for swimming driving directions. The coastline is buffeted by the waves, and there is a strong undertow. Elmina Castle in particular offers spectacular views of the ocean, which is a highlight of the trip.
A seashore dotted with softly waving palms and the brilliant water slamming against the coast can be seen from the top levels of the historic stone structure. It's difficult to believe that this was the final view that thousands of slaves had before being put into ships and sent to the Americas, yet that was exactly what happened.
